“Let's read and dance; These two distractions will never harm the world.”
The famous French writer and philosopher of the Enlightenment may have bestowed his precious mind on the world long ago. His words are true to this day, more accurately than they ever could be. Heimportance of readingit's totally undeniable.
In a digital world where information is thrown around like confetti, the importance of a good read cannot be undermined. Granted, a smartphone is a treasure trove of information, and it can be quite tempting to google something instead of flipping through the pages of a book. Plus, we're all busy and hardly find time to get a good night's sleep, let alone read a book! But all these valid arguments aside, there is so much more to reading than just expanding your knowledge or posting aesthetic photos of your books on Instagram.
It's ok if you're not a big fan of reading. But before you move away from books entirely, make a little effort to get out of your comfort zone and learn about the incredible benefits of reading. Seven reasons why reading is good for you
Have you ever wonderedWhy is reading good for you?? Or why should you finally pick up that book that has been sitting dusty and neglected on your shelf? Well, here are seven compelling reasons why reading is good for you!
1. Reading increases your knowledge
Well, that's a no-brainer. Books are a gold mine of information, and with every book you read, you learn new things and expand your knowledge. The more you read, the more you know about different subjects (fiction and non-fiction), different places, different people, their cultures, thoughts, perspectives and much more without even traveling to their country. In a way, the knowledge you gain from reading helps you make better, more informed decisions in life. No matter what genre you read, reading will enlighten you in every way imaginable.
2. Reading builds your vocabulary, improves your language skills and strengthens your communication skills
If you look closely, avid readers almost always have an endless supply of new words, and they rarely fail for lack of good vocabulary. Well, that's an amazing benefit of reading: it expands your vocabulary and introduces you to new words you wouldn't otherwise know. Also, active reading will help you master a certain language, and your ability to form sentences will become better and faster. A rich vocabulary and a good command of the language will naturally strengthen your communication skills, both written and spoken.
3. Reading improves focus and concentration
Focus and concentration seem like a luxury in the digital world, where dependence on technology is a necessary evil. Spending most of the day in front of a screen is not healthy for the eyes and makes us lose concentration and impatience. However, making reading a habit can be a constructive step in improving your ability to focus. Reading a book brings your full attention to the present and lengthens your attention span amid the constant flow of activities and disruptions of modern life.
4. Reading stimulates your imagination and encourages creative thinking
Reading opens up a world of imagination that no television show or film can match. While it's true that movies and videos help us remember things better, they don't fully activate our brain's creative side. But when you're reading a book, your brain gets the creative juices flowing, urging you to form a mental picture of what you've read. Reading gives you enough food for thought to feed your brain. It enables creative thinking and inspires you to think and think about different topics.
5. Reading improves your critical and analytical thinking skills.
When you read, your brain processes a lot of information at the same time. It gives your brain many different perspectives and thoughts to understand. For example, suppose you are reading a nerve-racking crime novel. As you read, your brain is constantly trying to figure out loopholes in the plot, who the killer might be, what might be the result of a specific event, or how different events might be connected to make sense. In a way, your brain works faster when you read, recognize patterns, solve puzzles, and analyze all possible perspectives. Therefore, reading sharpens your mind and develops your analytical and critical thinking skills.
6. Reading teaches empathy
In a world thriving on violence and conflict, empathy is a rare blessing. Being an empath means you are sensitive to the feelings of others, and as absurd as it may seem, books will help you become a more compassionate person. When you read a book, you connect with the plot and the characters. They become part of the story and begin to relate to what the characters are going through. In other words, you understand their joys, pains, and sorrows and feel like conversing with them in real life. Reading books also makes you a good listener because, in a way, you hear what the author has to convey through the characters, the dialogue, and the story.
7. Reading gives you a sense of belonging and keeps you grounded.
Do you feel lost and alone? Books can be your best friend. It may sound weird, but sometimes a good read is all you need to calm down and comfort, like a good meal at the end of a long day. As we read, we learn about various people who have gone through difficult times and still managed to move forward. It makes us feel like we are not alone and gives us hope to move on with life despite the obstacles. The more you read, the more you will realize how limited your knowledge is and how much further you need to go. It is a constant practice of humility.
